Problems of daytime sleep in the child

Daytime sleep is an important part of the small child's regimen. But sometimes with siesta there are difficulties. How to organize it correctly, we decided to find out.

In a dream, we spend a third of life. For many years physicians believed that sleep is just a "breather" for the body and a tired brain. Today it is proved that a full rest increases the activity of the baby's immune system, affects intellect, memory, cognitive abilities. And grandmother's quotes "Have a rest - grow up" received a scientific justification: it turns out that during the phase of slow sleep, growth hormone is released and children literally "grow up in the cradle". But sometimes babies have violations of sleep and wakefulness that threatens to result in a delay of mental, physical and intellectual development. In this case, it is important to find the cause of "dissonance" and eliminate it.

The ideal schedule

Among the violations of daytime sleep in babies, there are often two main problems:

1) The child does not want to sleep during the day, but sleeps very long at night, until lunch.

2) Too long to sleep in the daytime, and then "wanders" until midnight.

Specialists from New Zealand found that lack of sleep leads to the appearance of excess weight in children: the kids begin to fill the missing energy by excess consumption of high-calorie food.

Some parents wave their hands on the regime, believing that the children's organism "knows its norm better." This is a very reckless assumption, because, according to doctors, any sleep disorders have a very negative impact on the health of the child.

According to the data of American studies, newborns should sleep at least 11-15 hours, children of early age - 11-13 hours, preschool children - 10-11 hours.

Children's sleep is polyphasic (reusable). This means that infants sleep from 5 to 10 times a day, and children aged 1-1.5 years at night for at least 9 hours and 2 times a day for 1.5-2 hours with interruptions of 4-5 hours. After one and a half years, the crumb requires only one day rest lasting about 2 hours. During this period the child can be active for about 6 hours, after which it is necessary to restore the strength.

Long siesta

Of course, for parents it is very convenient, if a child in every afternoon rest "snorts" for 3-4 hours. Mom can calmly do their own thing. However, as a rule, after such a long sleep the child awakens capricious, irritable, and in the evening does not want to go to any one in the side. Since the child has shifted the regime of the day and the baby compensates for the lack of a night's sleep with a day's rest, any attempts to drive a crumb to bed at 9 o'clock are doomed to failure. The only way out is to shorten the siesta.

What to do? First of all, it is important to organize a full day for the kid and a clear regime: outdoor walks, classes, active games, gymnastics, swimming with toys. The schedule is important to observe from day to day. And even when visiting children's parties or guests try to stick to it.

By the way, after-dinner sleep is most significant for small "owls": from when the child is placed, his awakening will depend, and, accordingly, the evening "retreat". Therefore, the ideal time of the second noon sleep is not later than 14 hours.

And if the child has fallen asleep, it is necessary to wake him, delicately and tactfully. Do not immediately go to bed and take the baby in your arms. To begin with, you can turn on the light in the room (it's getting dark at 4 pm in winter), open the door to the nursery, and put a quiet lyrical music. Heard through the sleep of adult voices, the noise of a working radio / TV, pleasant melodies will contribute to the gradual and gentle awakening of a little drowsy.

Do you want to become smarter? Sleep!

Sometimes parents can hear that their child after a year and a half or two completely stopped sleeping during the day, but early in the evening and can sleep through 10-11 am. "And I get enough sleep with him! - Mom exclaims joyfully. "Now I no longer need to adjust to the day's rest, I plan my affairs regardless of the regime!" However, parental comfort is not always useful to the baby.

Thus, specialists from the University of California at Berkeley came to the conclusion that a brief day's sleep has a beneficial effect on the brain, improves mood, gives a sense of well-being and improves cognitive functions. One of the researchers, Matthew Walker, found that during the second stage of sleep, the short-term memory is cleared and prepared to receive new information. Therefore, children who have a rest during the day, develop much better than their peers, whose parents neglect siesta.

Turn off the TV The American somnologists published a study in the journal Pediatrics, claiming that watching TV after seven in the evening provokes the occurrence of sleep disorders in children. The author of the study, a pediatrician from the Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute, Michel Harrison, said that among the 100 children examined, one out of every five had persistent disturbances in sleep: the kids were tormented by nightmares, woke up in the middle of the night, and woke up unresponsive and sluggish.

What to do? Here the key role is played by the willingness of the mother to observe the schedule. If a child gets used to falling asleep in the street in a wheelchair in the daytime, putting him in a crib will be much more difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to prioritize and live according to plan.

Before going to bed the kid must eat and go to the pot. In the room it is worth pulling the curtains, creating an atmosphere of peace, giving the crumbs to your favorite toy and persuading "just to lie a little" in the crib. Running baby falls asleep, not lying and 15 minutes alone, especially if rest was preceded by a long walk and a hearty dinner.

The nervous system of the preschooler is immature and not very strong, so children are so important mode. Some parents tend to underestimate the importance of sleep. But the American somnologist Mark Weisslut of the Chicago Children's Memorial Hospital, one of the most famous children's experts in US somnology, believes that a lack of sleep is as dangerous to the baby as a deficit of iron or calcium! In the future, a child may suffer from memory problems, cognitive impairment, and possibly serious mental disorders. But to avoid negative consequences is very easy - just put the baby to sleep in time!
