Rashes on the skin of a newborn

The skin of the newborn is usually perfectly smooth, tender and velvety. But this is only in theory. In practice, it often appears pimples. However, there is no need to worry about this: as a rule, they pass quickly and without a trace.

In the first days of life on the face or mucous membrane of the oral cavity may form a milky - small pearly white papules (nodules) with a diameter of 1-2 mm. In another way, they are called "whiteheads": since the inflammatory process is absent, there is no redness. Usually the milium appears on the face around the eyes, on the cheeks, nose and temples. Such rashes do not require treatment and go through 1,5-2 weeks, when the sebaceous glands and their ducts begin to work together. On the 14-28th day, the baby may develop a rash in the form of red pimples with a white head (acne). In another way these rashes are also called hormonal acne of newborns. Pimples usually appear on the face, the scalp, less often on the upper third of the back and chest. They usually also do not fester and pass by themselves to 2-3 months.

The main reason for the emergence of both the milium and acne is one - a hormonal surge: the baby's body, including skin, is gradually adapting to the new conditions of life. Another reason: the ducts of the sebaceous glands are not yet fully formed. And since under the influence of male sex hormones (own and inherited by the child from the mother), sebum production in the first weeks of life increases, its surpluses do not have time to go outside. As a result, the pores are "immured". So the milium is formed. In parallel with hormonal reorganization is another important process - colonization of the skin with yeast-like fungi, which form an integral part of its normal microflora. However, at first, while the protective mechanisms do not work in full force, these microorganisms, as well as foreign bacteria from the external environment, can get into the clogged time and cause inflammation. Then on the skin of the baby can appear acne. And although in both cases, doctors prefer to take wait-and-see tactics, sometimes, to suppress the growth of fungi, a pediatrician or dermatologist can prescribe an antifungal cream with ketoconazole.

Proper care

To maintain the skin of the baby in a healthy state, it is necessary to look after it properly.

If the crumbs have acne, in the morning the face is better to wash with boiled water, and not wipe with a cotton swab. It is also useful 2-3 times a week to arrange herbal baths. Suitable is the turn, chamomile, calendula, celandine, plantain, mint: they have an anti-inflammatory and soothing effect. Prepare the decoction is very simple: you need to pour about 3 tbsp. l. herbs with one liter of boiling water and let it brew for an hour. But do not get involved with such trays, because they have a drying effect. Soap to use undesirable up to 6 months: it breaks the pH level and makes the vulnerable infantile skin even more vulnerable. Until now, it is better to use specialized means for bathing babies with a neutral pH.
