How to feed twins?

How to feed twins? Feed in turn or at the same time? When is it necessary to feed the kids?

Usually, with natural births, twins, as well as single children, immediately after birth are applied to the maternal breast. This is necessary both for a young mother (the mechanism of milk production is started, the uterus is better reduced), and for children (colostrum, which they will receive in the first minutes of life, contains a large number of useful substances, including immunoglobulins, which will allow the kids to continue to resist many infections). Most often, the baby who was born earlier tries the mother's milk first. At caesarean section children apply to a breast though not at once, but the same day. After completing all the necessary procedures you will be transferred to the postpartum department, where, if there are no contraindications (caesarean section, some diseases of the mother and children), you can be in the same room with the kids. During the first few days, until the milk arrives (and this happens, as a rule, on the third or fourth day), twins are applied to the chest and fed with colostrum. The need for children in nutrients is likely to be fully provided by the amount of colostrum that you will have, and supplementation with artificial mixtures will not be required. Let's discuss the issue of dopaivaniya newborn twins. There is a misconception that children who are naturally breastfed, especially in the first days of life, should be milked, as the colostrum and milk of the mother do not contain enough water. This is not true. Dopaivanie children are required only for various diseases associated with the loss of large amounts of fluid and high fever, with infectious diseases, as well as with hemolytic disease of the newborn. In colostrum and milk contain substances necessary to meet all the needs of the newborn. Colostrum prepares the child's gastrointestinal tract for the assimilation of real milk, promotes the formation of a "correct" flora of the intestine, and the prevention of intestinal infectious diseases. On the third or fourth day after childbirth, the mammary glands begin to produce milk. At the same time they are rude, a woman can get fever. To prevent the rapid tightening of the breast, you should use no more than 700-800 g of liquid per day in the first few days after birth. Later, when the rhythm of feeding is established and the danger of milk stagnation passes, this restriction will be lifted. Cope with this, perhaps, the most unpleasant moment of the postpartum period will help you qualified staff postpartum department.

Of course, the first days of the house will seem like a nightmare: you are left alone with newborns without round the clock support of medical workers and are now torn between caring for children, feeding and the desire to sleep. But your body has not completely recovered from pregnancy and childbirth. And here you can wish for this endurance and patience and necessarily - a good helper. First you need to decide on the schedule of the day. In the first months, when the intervals between feedings are small, it is very convenient to feed children at the same time. True, here the opinions of mothers who have been through feeding twins are diverging: someone thinks that it is unrealistic to choose an acceptable position for simultaneous feeding, while others share their experience with pleasure. You decide. You can try these positions: 1. The mother sits, under the feet - a little bench. Children are turned towards each other, their legs are crossed. 2. Children lie on their mother's lap on one pillow with their heads in different directions. 3. The mother sits, placing pillows on each side, on which they lay babies, one on each side, with their legs toward the back of the mother, and the mother's hands clasp the mother's hands to her chest. 4. The mother sits. One of the children is in front of the mother's stomach on her arm, the other is located on the pillow at her side, feet to her back.

If you decide to feed the children in turn, there will be a natural question: who will be the first? If one of the twins is weakened or sick, start feeding from it. Experience shows that, as a rule, twins wake up simultaneously and then with a loud cry demand attention to themselves. That's where your assistant comes in handy. While you are feeding one child, you need to rewrap the other, take it in your arms and try to calm down a little. Of course, with the alternate feeding, you will not be able to hold the sated baby at the breast longer, for his brother or sister also wants to eat. If the rhythm of sleep and feeding in children is somewhat different, then still try to teach children to one regime, otherwise your day will turn into one continuous feeding. Of course, twins can only be tuned to a certain regime provided that they are full and healthy. If the children are premature, have insufficient weight or if one child is weaker than the other, then at the first stage both children should be fed on demand, depending on their needs. After a few weeks, the kids will get stronger and gain weight, and after consulting with the pediatrician, it will be possible to gradually make the feeding schedule common to both children. Perhaps it will happen by itself and without your intervention. Usually milk from one breast is not enough to feed two, so children are put each to "their" mammary gland. After feeding, the remaining milk from the breast is not needed, because the body produces it as much as it needs, and decanting the breast, you give a kind of set-up for the fact that more milk is required, creating a vicious circle: the decantation of residual milk - a tide of more. There is an opinion that before breast-feeding the breast should be washed, if not with soap, then with water. In fact, it will be enough to wash the breast with a mild detergent during shower once a day.

Accumulating fatigue requires that the process of feeding has become for you a kind of rest. Accept the most comfortable position for you, place a pillow under your back; if you are nursing sitting, put your feet on a stand or a small bench. When feeding, make sure that the lips of the kids completely cover your areola, while their spouts remain free. One option for alternate feeding may be lying down, when both you and your babies lie in bed. You can put a cushion under your elbow. Choosing a prone position, try not to fall asleep: although it is believed that a sensitive mother does not crush her child, it is better not to create dangerous situations.

Feeding twins, in addition to physical and mental strength, requires the mother to take a more considerate attitude to herself, to her food and rest. Try to ensure that your food contains a large amount of nutrients, was high-calorie (there is no need to eat only flour products, and they are not particularly useful to your children). Food should be rich in vitamins. During this period, as in pregnancy, it makes sense to take multivitamins. You should receive 1.5-2 liters of fluid per day (your own need plus excreted breast milk). A nursing mother can drink tea, compotes, freshly squeezed juices. Prefer milk and sour-milk products, low-fat meat, steamed products. It must be remembered that excessive food and drink do not increase the amount of milk, but are an unnecessary strain on the mother's body. Do not forget that everything you eat inevitably gets to kids with milk. Therefore, exclude from your diet products that cause food allergy (citrus fruits, raspberries, strawberries), as well as vegetables and fruits that promote increased gas production - cabbage, grapes, etc. It is necessary to avoid sharp dishes, canned food, sausages, fatty meat, fried foods. During breastfeeding, you can not drink carbonated drinks.

Of course, in the first months of life it is desirable to exclusively breastfeed. But, if the active measures you have taken do not bring the desired results and milk is not enough, you will have to supplement the kids with artificial mixtures. They are given after the breast and preferably from a spoon. The nipple at the bottle must necessarily be elastic with a small hole. If in the diet of children the proportion of breast milk prevails over the proportion of the substitute, it makes sense to offer them a sour-milk mixture intended for children of this age. In a situation where breast milk is less, it is possible to use a combination of an adapted mixture and a dairy product or only an adapted mixture.

Over time, you and your children will work out a convenient daily routine. And then you will be able to successfully combine all your household chores with meals and fully enjoy the joy of motherhood sent to you doubly.
